Blur Image Online – Blur, Pixelate & Redact Free

EveryTool's free blur tool lets you blur, pixelate, or solid-redact any region of a photo directly in your browser. It uses the browser's native Canvas API and a mask-compositing pipeline: your image is read into memory via the FileReader API, three effect types (Gaussian blur, pixelation, solid fill) are applied client-side, and the result is exported as a Blob URL - zero network requests, zero data exposure. Unlike Photoshop or Canva, no account, no install, and no file upload is ever required.

Features

AI Face & Background Detect

Two independent AI engines built in. Face detection (MediaPipe BlazeFace) finds every face and blurs them automatically. Background segmentation (MediaPipe Selfie Segmenter) isolates people and blurs the background, keeping subjects sharp. Both run fully on-device via WebAssembly - no server involved.

Brush, Box & Circle Tools

Paint blur freehand with an adjustable brush - set the size (5–300px) and edge feather (0–80%) for soft or hard transitions. Switch to Box or Circle shape mode to drag a precise, resizable region over a face, license plate, address, or block of sensitive text.

Gaussian · Pixelate · Solid Redact

Three effect types: Gaussian Blur applies a smooth, camera-like softening. Pixelate creates a mosaic censor block - adjust block size from 4 to 80px. Solid Redaction fills the region with a flat color of your choice - the most legally robust option since there are no residual pixels to recover.

Erase Mode & 40-Step Undo

Switch to Erase mode (press E) to paint blur away from any specific area without starting over. Full 40-step undo history (Ctrl+Z) lets you step back through every change. Hold the Compare button to preview the original image side-by-side at any time.

Secure Local Processing

All blurring runs through the browser Canvas API - zero files are ever sent to any server. Works fully offline once the page loads. Suitable for ID cards, medical records, legal documents, bank statements, and any confidential image you cannot afford to upload to an external service.

Zoom, Pan & Full Mobile Support

Pinch-to-zoom and drag-to-pan let you work with precision on small areas. Full touch support on iOS and Android - upload from your camera roll and paint blur with your finger. Keyboard shortcuts (B, R, C, E, F, [ ], Ctrl+Z) speed up desktop workflows.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I blur part of an image?

Upload your image, then select the Brush, Box, or Circle tool. Brush lets you paint freehand over any area; Box and Circle let you drag a resizable shape precisely over the region. Adjust the blur strength slider, then click Download. All processing runs in your browser via the Canvas API - the image is never uploaded to any server.

How do I blur a face in a photo?

The fastest way is to click 'AI: Detect & Blur Faces' - it uses MediaPipe BlazeFace to automatically find every face and blur it with a padding margin around each bounding box. For manual control, use the Circle tool and drag it over the face, or paint directly with the Brush tool. You can zoom in for precision on small or distant faces. All AI processing runs on-device.

What is the difference between Gaussian Blur, Pixelate, and Solid Redaction?

Gaussian Blur applies smooth, natural-looking softening - ideal for backgrounds and portraits. Pixelate creates a mosaic block effect (the classic TV censor look) - adjust block size from 4 to 80px. Solid Redaction fills the area with an opaque color bar - the strongest option for legal privacy, since there are no underlying pixel values to recover, unlike blurred or pixelated regions.

How does the AI Background Blur work?

The AI Background Blur uses MediaPipe's Selfie Segmenter model, which runs entirely on-device in your browser via WebAssembly. It outputs a confidence mask - pixels where person confidence is above 50% are kept sharp, everything else receives the blur effect. The tool also silently auto-runs this segmentation when you first upload an image, so background blur may already be applied before you touch any setting.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No - your images never leave your device. The browser's FileReader API loads the image into memory, and the HTML5 Canvas API applies all blur effects client-side using a mask-compositing pipeline. The blurred output is generated as a local Blob URL and downloaded directly to your device. No network request is made during processing - making it safe for ID cards, medical images, and confidential documents.

Is the blur tool completely free?

Yes - completely free with no hidden limits. There are no subscriptions, no watermarks on output, no account required, and no usage caps. You can blur as many images as needed. EveryTool is a free browser-based toolkit with 60+ tools across image editing, PDF, developer utilities, and calculators. All tools are free, browser-based, and require no sign-up whatsoever.

Does blurring reduce image quality?

No. The unblurred portions of your image are preserved at their original pixel resolution. Only the selected region receives the effect. PNG export is lossless. JPG export lets you set quality from 10–100% (default 92%) - unblurred areas remain sharp. The tool always processes the image at its native dimensions, so a 4000×3000px photo stays 4000×3000px in the downloaded file.

Can I blur only the background and keep the subject sharp?

Yes. Click 'AI: Blur Background' and the tool uses MediaPipe Selfie Segmenter to detect the person and apply blur only to the background, keeping the subject in sharp focus - similar to portrait mode on a smartphone. For images without a person, use the Brush tool to manually paint over the background, or the Box tool to cover specific non-subject regions.

How do I pixelate a face instead of blurring it?

In the Effect panel, switch from 'Blur' to 'Pixel'. Then use Brush, Box, or Circle to paint over the face - the tool applies a mosaic block instead of a smooth blur. Adjust the Pixel Block slider to set block size: larger blocks create a more heavily censored look. The AI Face Detect button also respects whichever effect type is currently selected when it applies the result.

Can I erase or undo blur I've applied?

Yes, two ways. Switch to Erase mode (press E or click Erase in the toolbar) and paint over any blurred region to restore the original pixels underneath - it works exactly like a brush eraser. Alternatively, use Undo (Ctrl+Z) to step back through up to 40 canvas states. Your original image file on your device is never touched - the tool always works on an in-browser copy.

Does the tool work on mobile phones?

Yes, fully optimized for iOS and Android. Upload from your camera roll or take a new photo. The canvas supports pinch-to-zoom, two-finger pan, and single-finger brush painting. The toolbar adapts to smaller screens. All AI features also work on mobile - MediaPipe models run via WebAssembly in the mobile browser. Tested on Chrome for Android, Safari for iOS, and Samsung Internet.

Is the blur permanent after downloading?

The blur is permanently applied in the downloaded file and cannot be reversed from that file. However, your original image on your device is never modified - the tool always operates on a copy held in browser memory. To refine the blur, re-upload the original. For maximum privacy, always use Solid Redaction rather than Gaussian blur, since blur can theoretically be partially reversed with AI upscaling tools.

What image formats are supported?

You can upload JPG, PNG, and WEBP images. Animated GIFs and TIFF files are not currently supported. For downloading, choose JPG (with quality slider 10–100%) or PNG (lossless, no compression loss). PNG is recommended for screenshots with text - JPG compression can introduce blocky artifacts around high-contrast edges, which may make obscured text partially legible at low quality settings.

Why use EveryTool instead of Photoshop or Canva?

Photoshop requires a $20+/month Adobe subscription and a desktop install. Canva uploads your image to their servers - a privacy risk for sensitive documents. EveryTool is completely free, requires no account, installs nothing, and processes everything client-side via the Canvas API, so confidential photos, IDs, and legal files never touch an external server. AI face detection and background segmentation are both included at no cost.
