Metric vs Imperial Weight

The metric system uses grams and kilograms as the primary weight units - a gram is one-thousandth of a kilogram, a tonne is one thousand kilograms. The imperial and US customary systems use ounces, pounds, and tons - with 16 ounces in a pound and 2,000 pounds in a US short ton (2,240 in a UK long ton). The key conversion: 1 kg = 2.20462 lbs exactly, and 1 ounce = 28.3495 grams. The UK stone (14 lbs) is used almost exclusively for body weight.

Troy Weight for Precious Metals

The troy weight system is used for precious metals and gemstones. A troy ounce (31.1035g) is about 10% heavier than a regular ounce (28.3495g). Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium prices are always quoted per troy ounce. The carat, used for gemstone weight, is a separate metric unit equal to 0.2 grams - not to be confused with karat (purity of gold).
